By substantially revising the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998 (CMA), Malaysia intends to fortify its cybercrime legislation. The government has taken this step in response to the proliferation of harmful digital crimes, including fraud, illicit betting, and others.

One major issue is that websites are exploring methods to bypass regulations to reach gamers in Malaysia who are interested in online gambling. The government is determined to end unlawful operators by increasing surveillance of social media and messaging applications and implementing stricter fines. To combat online gambling or scams, these websites would have to collect user data and assist in monitoring activities.

Would not be surprised. But at what point is data security used for good, and at what point does it breach privacy issues?
